Falling in Love with Fall

In my September e-letter, I asked readers to tell me what they loved so much about fall, since it’s my least favorite season. And boy, did you tell me! Here’s a sampling. Thanks so much… and I’m trying to drink in your words!

  • “All of the colors–oranges, yellows, reds and browns.”  —Connie G.
  • “Because it’s not too hot, it’s not cold; it’s just right. There’s not too many bugs either during fall season. And to me, fall is almost Christmas.” —Maria C.
  • “Back to school! I only have one child left in school, and I no longer teach, substitute-teach, or volunteer at school due to my work schedule (though my work is connected to education, it’s a year-round job).

But I love back-to-school time, because there’s all those new office supplies … pens to try out, notebooks and folders and organizing supplies. Of course I have to sample them! I got a spiffy new notebook today. I love having fresh office supplies.” —Barb S.

  • “As a summer gal, who wrote Beach Chair Diaries, it’s been one of the most difficult summers not be able to swim until this weekend.  I had a boating accident on 7/1 but am looking forward to a warm September.  I too used to love fall until I moved to a seashore community.  There are two favorite fall memories; going to Colby Sawyer College in New London NH, taking a hiking course and experiencing the beauty of the colorful autumn woods.

My other favorite fall memory is traveling throughout New England for business and being in Vermont during the peak of the foliage.  Many times, I’ve had to park my car to get out and look at the amazing beauty of the ‘painted leaves’ as the Vermonters refer to it.   As a writer, I’ve tried to years to write a out the foliage, when the staff at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, finally helped me to realize that it’s not only the color, the experience, but the smell and the sound of the leaves.  It almost makes me look forward to fall.” —Janet S.

  • Contrary to the calendar, Autumn is actually the beginning of the year. After a summer of travel, sitting by the pool, and spending lazy afternoons in a hammock, we get back to the routines of living.

In no particular order, these are the reasons that I love Autumn.

1.We can get a deep breath of cool, dry air.

2.The brilliant hues of fall leaves.

    3.The World Series.

4.The sound of crickets in the evening.

5.Walking through the dry leaves in the woods.

6.The warm glow in a fireplace and the crackle of the logs.

    7.Chrysanthemums.

8.Friday night football games at the high school.

9.Watching the squirrels hide their acorns.

    10.Children going back to school.

Truth be told, I used to think that #10 was my favorite, but I still love to see kids walking to school in their new clothes and soon-to-be-filled backpacks.” –Betty Anne H.

  • “Although I love summer I do love the smells and sights of Autumn.  The crisp fresh air, the spices in food and coffees and teas (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pumpkin spice!) and the colors.  I love wearing sweaters that are nutmeg, burgundy, burnt orange, rust, rich browns and purple.   And the trees are beautiful and brilliant in color…..proof that God is a wonderful artist!!!” —Angela D.
  • “Summer is like being in the doldrums, mostly too hot and humid to want to do anything.  Autumn is when I come back to life, re-energized, reveling in the cool, crisp air and the riot of colors on the trees.  Summer is when friends are away.  Autumn is for renewing relationships.  Autumn is my favorite time of the year.” –Colleen O.
