The Basics: Born January 30, 1883, in Germany; died June 11, 1933, in Austria; feast day, June 12; wife, mother, politician.
The Story: Hildegard was the daughter of non-practicing Jewish parents, and from an early age had a thirst for knowledge. She attended the University of Zurich, and earned a doctorate there, which was relatively unusual for a woman at that time. It was there she met the man who would become her husband, and they moved to Berlin to begin their lives together.
When she was twenty-five, Hildegard had a severe attack of what most likely was renal colic. Four surgeries did not resolve the issue, and her life was at risk. The pain ended on Easter Sunday, and Hildegard was drawn to the faith she had seen from the Sisters of Mercy, the nursing staff at the hospitalization. She and her husband both converted in the following year or so.
After moving to Austria and giving birth to a daughter in a high-risk pregnancy, Hildegard’s social justic activities drew the interest of political powers, who asked her to run for the National Assembly. In her single two-year term, she spearheaded a successful effort setting minimum wages and working conditions for household workers.
After her time in the Assembly, Hildegard continued to advocate for those in need through Sisters of Caritas Socialis, a group of women religious and laywomen that continues to serve today.
Hildegard’s Wisdom: “”Full interest in politics belongs to practical Christianity.”
What We Can Learn from Hildegard: Disagreements don’t have to result in shouting and grudges. Sharing our views and opinions in a reasoned tone and listening to those who see things a different way can lead to compromises that benefit everyone.
