Wednesday’s Woman: Blessed Maria Crucified Satellico

The Basics: Born December 31, 1706, in Italy; died November 8, 1745, in Italy; beatified October 10, 1993, by John Paul II; feast day, November 8. Woman religious.

The Story: Maria’s short life was full of both struggle and joy. From childhood, perhaps influenced by a priest uncle who lived with her family, Maria wanted to become a sister. She joined the local Poor Clares monastery when she was fourteen and professed her vows when she was nineteen. Maria spent a term as abbess, but was not able to continue in the role even after her re-election. For while she was regarded as gentle and kind by her colleagues and admired for her musical abilities, her mystical encounters–and battles with demons–proved to be challenging. At time she would be lifted in the air or experience bodily trauma, including a report she was dragged over rocky ground. Two spiritual directors helped her find relief. Maria died of tuberculosis.

Maria’s Wisdom: “I want to become a nun and, if I succeed, I want to become a saint.”

What We Can Learn from Maria: We may not be beset by demons that harm us so visibly and physically, but evil is always looking for ways to worm its way into our souls. Pray for vigilance.
