Simbang Gabi Day 7: Our House

“This is our house,” the priest said in his homily at today’s pre-dawn Mass. “We are the children of God.”

And what a house it is! The Montgomery girls did the readings this morning. I felt like a doddering old aunt as I fawned over them and their mother before Mass began as we were making sure the readings were set. They’ve gotten so big! They’re young ladies now! Only one of them still needs a stepstool at the ambo! They’re beautiful! And they rolled their eyes a little and smiled, just as one does with an old aunt you don’t see very often.

The little altar boy was back, but we got to see the boy in him in addition to the angel. There was a bug of some sort on the steps leading to the altar. Someone got up and killed it, but it took a while to trap the thing. The little altar boy put his hands to his mouth and giggled. And, with joy, so did all of us who were watching him.

A sick child we were praying for died, so we moved her into the prayers for the dead, along with two men who died on Tuesday. And we’ve got a bevy of additional people who will be added on Friday. We pray for a lot of people in our house. We pray for all of God’s family.

Note: Just in case you’re wondering, I missed Simbang Gabi Day 6 because I went to see “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” with my sister the evening before and got home very late. More on that another time.
