On Mondays, I answer questions frequently asked by those considering a return to the Catholic Church. How do I know this stuff? I was away for more than 30 years myself, and am the co-author of When They Come Home: Ways to Welcome Returning Catholics, a book for pastors and parish leaders interested in this ministry.
I had a vasectomy or hysterectomy while I was away from the Church. Will they let me back in, or am I condemned to hell no matter what I do now?
First, remember that God loves us all and is merciful; any offense, no matter how grave, can be forgiven.
Second, this is a concern that would best be discussed one on one with a priest. Some things to think about before that discussion: What was the reason for the vasectomy or hysterectomy? If it was to prevent procreation and the operation was done with full knowledge that this decision was counter to Church teachings , it’s a grave matter. If another medical reason was involved or if you weren’t aware of the Church’s stand to encourage and promote life, the situation is different.
