Of Sacred Artwork and Good Intentions

I’m not much for recommending things beyond books I love, and fellow editors and writers I trust. Just because I like a restaurant or a line of clothes or a Web hosting service doesn’t mean you will. Our expectations and needs may be totally different. And while I have a great respect for marketing (after all, it’s part of what I do for a living), I don’t take ads for this blog or my Web site or any other part of my ministry.

So it’s a big deal to me to recommend that anyone who writes in the spiritual realm (not limited to Catholics) takes a quick look at this wonderful offer from Restored Traditions. Through the end of September, they’re giving away Web quality images for everything from Old Testament scenes to the parables to the saints and angels. Yep, giving ’em away. I just downloaded about six dozen of them to use here and in social media. No charge. No muss, no fuss. No requirement or even “request” that you make a donation (which I plan to) or that you share the news with your friends (which I’m doing unprompted). The artists include such bright lights as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Michelangelo. You’ll recognize many of the images; I’ve included a few here.

Why are they doing this? Patrick Werick of Restored Traditions writes at the site that it’s for the glory of God and evangelization. He goes on to say: “Make these images your desktops, your phones’ background images, your memorial card for Aunt Gertrude’s funeral, your heading in a blog post. Take this art and plaster it anywhere you can, but please don’t let it sit in an obscure and forgotten computer folder of all the free stuff you’ve downloaded since the Bush administration.”

So… get downloading… and giving thanks!
