Of Friendship, Fishing, and Food

“Come, have breakfast.”

Such simple, loving words.

The apostles were lost without Jesus, as John reminds us in today’s Gospel reading. In fact, Peter and some of the others who were fishermen by trade had even lost the ability to catch anything on their own.

Then the Master appeared, and they couldn’t even bring the net into the boat, it was so full of fish.

Did Jesus ridicule their failure? Would a friend do that to another friend? Of course not, especially when he knew they were hungry from fishing all night without success. Instead, Jesus prepared a fire, provided bread, and invited them to dine with him.

Soon, he would be gone in earthly form from their world. They would go on to do great, heroic acts in his name.

But now, it was time for breakfast.
