Sarah was a God-fearing woman. But the promise God had made to Abraham that she would “give rise to nations” at ninety, she who had never given birth, well, it was illogical. It was irrational. It was impossible. It was downright laughable.

And so she laughed the messengers’ promise she would have a son in the next year. We can hear her laugh—not one of joy and happiness, but one of incredulity, disbelief, even bitterness.

But while Sarah was a God-fearing woman, in the next year she found out what God could do and would do was beyond her human understanding, beyond what she regarded as believable. She gave birth to Isaac and through him, God would teach Abraham and Sarah and the world a thing or two about faith, obedience, and mercy.

God asked Abraham, “Is there anything too marvelous for the Lord to do?” We know what the answer was in Sarah’s case. Maybe we open our own hearts and souls to that which our minds tell us is illogical, irrational, impossible, and downright laughable.
