Every Day Catholics

A little over a week ago, I was asked about being profiled in Every Day Catholic‘s August issue. I was honored, and said yes of course. If you don’t know Every Day Catholic, its goal is to help readers apply Christian principles to everyday life.

As a result, I’ve been thinking about just what an “every day Catholic” is. And I’ve seen some brave ones in the past few days:

  • a single mom who left the Church for a time and now is back with her beautiful infant son
  • a vibrant fiftysomething woman who said Hail Marys with calm and confidence as she was being rushed to the hospital while she suffered a stroke
  • a woman facing with confidence the life changes that come with retirement after a lengthy, productive career
  • a young woman raised Catholic who’s not currently a Churchgoer but is saying rosaries for a sick relative
  • a woman who put aside her lack of self-confidence to play beautiful music for an appreciative audience of twenty friends

In short, an “every day Catholic” (or “every day Christian,” for that matter) is someone who has fears and challenges just like anyone else–and who relies on Christ, consciously or unconsciously, in moving forward on his or her journey. And that’s special, all the more so that it can happen every day.
