But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:9-10, NRSVCE)

God knew where Adam was, of course. God knows everything. God also knew about the last thing Adam wanted to do was converse with God, but there it was.

There is no escape.

Oh, we can ignore God. That will grieve God, but God still never goes away. God’s patient. God waits. But God never goes away. Adam learned that. Adam also learned that avoiding God, loving as God is, has consequences. Lame excuses won’t change that.

Yes, God is our refuge. Yes, God can be ignored and avoided. But make no mistake. Whether you truly believe in God’s presence or in your soul of souls doubt that presence makes no difference.

There is no escape—only sweet surrender.
