“Give them some food yourselves,” Jesus says when the apostles ask him to disperse the crowd so the throngs can find something to eat. And we can all imagine the blank stares, right?
Jesus, being Jesus, shows them how it’s done. It’s a miracle, to be sure. But it all starts with him looking heavenward, praying, then blessing the scant food that’s available. It feeds everyone, with plenty to spare.
Here’s the thing. With the Lord’s help, we can all do miracles. But like the apostles, we tend to look at things through a worldly lens: More than five thousand hungry people? Five loaves? Two fishes? No money? These are impediments for human beings, but they are nothing for God.
An adult child involved in human trafficking or pornography? A spouse addicted to alcohol, drugs, or food? Our own propensity to gossip, demean others verbally, sit back when something needs to be said for fear of ridicule? We cannot solve one of these problems on our own or with solely earthly assistance. We need Him in our souls like our lungs need air.
And when we open ourselves to being vessels for His miracles, we do miracles. We become miracles.
