The Basics: Born in the first century in Syria; died about 107 in Lebanon; canonized precongregation;  feast day, March 1. Martyr.

The Story: Eudocia seemingly had it all: She was extremely wealthy, and she was extremely beautiful. Her willingness to sell the latter had resulted in the former. But she wasn’t bothered by the fact that she had demeaned herself as a woman to amass her money.

She fell ill, and during the time she was receiving care, Eudocia encountered a monk named Germanus. He provided her with spiritual instruction, and she came to see the error of her ways and to desire to live closer to the light. She gave up her worldly gains and ambitions at thirty, and entered a monastery.

But it turned out the Lord desired more from Eudocia. She was caught up in Roman persecutions, and was beheaded.

Eudocia’s Wisdom: “…the angel took me by the hand, and led me home again, saying, ‘There is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth’…”

What We Can Learn from Eudocia: Eudocia found her way to God through Germanus. Is there someone whose lifestyle you find repulsive? Perhaps the Lord desires to use you to reach this person. Be open to His call.
