Returning Catholic FAQs: About the Rosary

On Mondays, I answer questions frequently asked by those considering a return to the Catholic Church. How do I know this stuff? I was away for more than 30 years myself, and am the co-author of  When They Come Home: Ways to Welcome Returning Catholics, a book for pastors and parish leaders interested in this ministry.

Do I have to say the rosary every day if I return to the Church?

No, you don’t have to say the rosary every day… or ever. Many people, including some saints and popes, find the rosary a beautiful way to meditate on the mysteries of our faith and of Christ’s time on earth and returning_rosary_wikimedia20150606his continuing presence in our life. Many parishes offer a daily communal offering of the rosary.

The history of the rosary–with prayers including the Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, Glory Be and more–goes back centuries.

That said, if you prefer a more free-form conversation with God, go right ahead. The important thing is finding a prayer practice that draws you closer to him, recognizing that that practice may change with time and your situation.
