Who I Am

I’m in team formation for a women’s Cursillo Weekend. If you’re not familiar with Cursillo, it’s similar to the Road to Emmaus and other experiences that celebrate Christ and his presence in community and small faith-sharing groups. About a dozen laywomen and a priest prepare talks and moderate table discussions to help those entering the community to deepen their relationships with Christ. It’s challenging, energizing, emotional, all good things.

At a meeting this week, our musician introduced us to “Daughter of God,” which talks of the lyricist’s connection to women in the Bible. The song starts with, “I am Eve, walking in the garden.”

The song’s been on my mind all week. Who inspires my walk right now? Here are a few of the examples I’ve meditated on:

  • I am Peter, so unbelievably dense and bullheaded and literal, yet confident I am loved and can be forgiven
  • I am Paul, having had my eyes opened on a personal road to Damascus
  • I am David, living and at times sinning large, a dancer in the rain
  • I am Teresa of Avila, losing myself and my insecurities and ego in prayer
  • I am Joan Chittister, carrying the cross I chose by the goal I seek
  • I am Julian of Norwich, sure that ultimately, all shall be well

Who are you?
