The Basics: Birthdate and place unknown; died in 484, possibly in Tunisia; canonized pre-congregation; feast day, December 6. Martyr.
The Story: This saint is described as beautiful, as so many others are. She was also strong. Dionysia lived in North Africa during the time of King Huneric, notorious for his persecution of Christians. Her young son Majorcus wept as she was scourged; she called out to him to be brave. The two of them and Dionysia’s sister were burned at the stake; two companions were in essence skinned. It is estimated that Huneric, who died later that same year, had five thousand Christians put to death during his reign.
Dionysia’s Wisdom: The martyr told her son: “We must not lose the garment of our salvation, lest the Master of the feast find us without wedding clothes and cast us into outer darkness.”
What We Can Learn from Dionysia: Even when we are suffering ourselves, we can inspire and fortify others. Consider putting aside your own hurts for an hour today and reach out to a loved one who needs your support.
