In Praise of Friends and Friends of Friends

David Cortner, who earlier this year took some of my scribblings and ideas and turned them into melanierigney.com, just finished some tweaks and updates to my editing business site, editorforyou.com. (Check it out–new photo, new home page treatment, new navigation.)

When I launched EFY in late 2003, I knew I had to have a Web site. I put up something really simple using templates from Network Solutions, and it was adequate. When I was ready for something a little more sophisticated (read: when I had a few, and I do mean a few, bucks), I reached out to Nancy Hendrickson, who had written for me at Writer’s Digest and who is an Internet marketing guru. She and David are friends through other interests, and the three of us had worked together along with some other friends on a small book publishing concern (until we all decided we could make more money doing other things). Nancy and David gave me a professional-looking Web site for next to nothing. They knew my financial situation at the time, and gave me the friend of the house rate. And I don’t care what they say to the contrary, even though my financial situation has improved significantly, I think I still got the friend of the house rate from both of them for melanierigney.com (Nancy built this blog) and editorforyou.com.

And really, isn’t that life at its best, when we get to do what we love, do it for people we know and like (or who are friends of people we know and like)? So let me be a friend in kind: If you’re looking for someone to create or overhaul your Web site, check out David. If you’re looking for Internet marketing help, consider Nancy. They’re good people.
