Wednesday’s Woman: St. Salome

The Basics: Born late 1st century BC, possibly in what is now Israel; died circa 47, possibly in France or Italy; canonized pre-congregation; feast day, October 22. Mother; evangelist.

The Story: We know her as the wife of Zebedee, mother of the apostles James and John, the woman who was so bold as to ask Jesus to put her sons at his left and right hands. Jesus answered that that was up to the Father… and asked if the brothers were ready to saints_salome_wikimedia_publicdomain20151010“drink from the cup that I am about to drink.” But while Salome (sometimes known as Mary Salome) may seem to be one of the earliest helicopter mothers, her faith didn’t begin and end with promoting her sons. She also is named as one of the women at the crucifixion, and may have been the Blessed Virgin’s sister. Some sources say Salome went on to evangelize in the Lord’s name in Italy and/or France.

What We Can Learn from Salome: Ultimately, shameless self-promotion of ourselves or those we love seldom accomplishes the desired result. What we think we want may not be what it appears to be. Like Salome, we are at our best when we are supporting others in pain or joy. Consider ratcheting back a bit your case for your child, grandchild, or yourself being the star of one of life’s minidramas. Trust the Lord.

Thank you Melanie for this beautiful reflection on Salome – one of my favorite women of the New Testament. I am a writer myself, and am in the process of publishing my first book, which is a devotional on women who encountered Jesus. I also am an actress and perform as several of these remarkable women. God bless you in your work!
