The Basics: Born October 31, 1618, in Ecuador; died May 26, 1645, in Ecuador; canonized 1950 by Pius XII; feast day, May 26. Mystic, hermit.

The Story: The woman known as the Lily of Quito lost her parents when she was just four, and was raised by an older sister. At a young age, Mariana wanted to enter a monastery, but God had other plans for her. saints_marianadejesusdeparedes_wikimedia_20150217Instead, at twelve she became a hermit in a single room at the house. The only time she ventured out was to go to Mass or serve others. It is said Mariana, a secular Franciscan, experienced ecstasies, cured people, foretold the future… and lived on next to nothing other than the Holy Eucharist.

Her hometown of Quito was beset by sorrows in 1645–an earthquake followed by epidemics. Mariana offered herself up for the suffering of the city’s residents. She died shortly after making a statement to that effect. In 1945, she was named a national heroine of Ecuador.

What We Can Learn from Mariana: Consider offering up your aches and pains and troubles today for a particular challenge facing your town, state or country. Spend a half hour in solitude praying that the troubles will be alleviated.

To Learn More About Mariana: The City Museums Foundation of Quito has information on the Museo del Carmen Alto whiche opened in 2013 on grounds that include the place where Mariana lived.
